schneefink: Dracula's castle (Castlevania castle)

I'm procrastinating, so have some unsorted Castlevania thoughts.

- I'm very hesitant about the idea of Alucard and Greta in a romantic relationship. The way Greta treats Alucard makes perfect sense for what she knows of him, which is probably mostly rumors, that he's half-vampire, that he killed his father etc. etc., and then he tells her about Sumi and Taka. Essentially Greta eventually treats him like someone who never managed to get his life together on his own so he needs her help, she even literally says that he's lucky he now has her to run his life. But the thing is, Alucard is a teenager. Even if Lisa got pregnant the day after meeting Dracula he's 21 at most, and my guess is more like 18 or 19 max. It's completely normal for him not to have his life together, especially with all of his trauma. And Greta is definitely several years older than him, I would have guessed she's about thirty. I could only see them in a stable and equal romantic relationship maybe a few years after the series ends.

- Greta's jacket is stupid and impractical, and her hair seems very impractical as well. My best guess is that she deliberately wears a style that makes her stand out in order to reinforce her authority. She's from Danesti, but I assume that she spent several years elsewhere and learned to fight as well as she does. Then she returned and eventually took over leadership, maybe the previous head of the village died during the first attack of Dracula's hordes.

- When Alucard decided to bring the survivors of Danesti to the castle, he must have flown ahead to get rid of the staked corpses so the children wouldn't see them. I bet one day Greta will off-handedly mention them only for Trevor and Sypha to go "you did what??"

- Other than hesitation about the romance, I liked the storyline of Alucard with the survivors of Danesti. I wish the writers had not apparently mostly forgotten what happened with Sumi and Taka, maybe have Alucard express some more reluctance to trust these humans or show him more actively making a decision to do that despite his experiences (only for Saint Germain to turn out to be another scumbag), but I do like Alucard deciding to help people even though he personally has been ill-treated, just like Trevor did, and how obvious it is that being around people, and children, is good for him. (He made dolls of Trevor and Sypha and talked to them!!)

- Speaking of Alucard being a teenager, the fandom wiki says Trevor is twenty, and I would guess Sypha at around the same age. These three are great together. I was sad that they barely got to spend any time together in seasons 3 and 4 (and I would have wanted Trevor and Sypha to at least mention Alucard once or twice), but at least their reunion was great. Great fight scenes, too.

- Another nice thought, both Alucard and Trevor had to watch family members burn! Presumably: iirc it is never said that Trevor watched his family home destroyed, he could have been elsewhere, but I always assumed he was hiding in the woods. And we don't know where exactly Alucard was but I assumed he was watching his mother die via a distance mirror, too far away to get there in time and yet unable to look away. (I want the AU where he manages to convince Dracula to only wipe out Targoviste.)

- Sypha has the least backstory of the main trio, which is a shame. I want the fic that is all about her discovering magic. She had to hide it all her life, because Speakers being known as magicians/witches would put her entire family in danger – the rumors of her appearance at Gresit still might – and then she travels with Trevor and Alucard and suddenly she can, she needs to use it, and use it offensively too, and creatively. I bet it felt freeing. Suddenly she can show that she's a badass, she can openly help and she gets recognition for it, and she does take it seriously but she also has fun fighting.

- I wonder how magic works? Sypha's magic seems to be inexhaustible, and none of the other magicians we see seem to tire from using their abilities either. My guess would be that the limit is concentration. Maybe learning/doing magic is like how some mathematicians allegedly can imagine four dimensions, but it's very difficult and requires a lot of practice (at least I think I read about that once and I like the comparison.) So in theory everyone can learn but not everyone has a knack for it. Sypha does, and coming up with different spells is like coming up with different multidimensional shapes - it's easier if you're familiar with them but if you're good, like Sypha is, you can adapt them on the fly. It's not a perfect metaphor but it could work for some cases.
Or maybe only some people are born with the ability to do magic, or maybe only specific kinds of magic, like Forgemastery, require an innate ability, idk. We know that there are differences between human and vampire magic.
