schneefink: River walking among trees, from "Safe" (Default)
Very soon after I posted my last origfic rec post I thought of several others I couldn't believe I forgot (and then later it kinda made sense because they're in a different mental category for me mostly because of length), so here, have some more.

Outlands by [archiveofourown.org profile] Maldoror_Chant
310k, OMC/OMC, portal fantasy into ~fantasy ancient Assyria, series (6 completed stories, 1 more to come)
Summary: Ryou, a relentlessly repressed and controlled accountant, accidentally slips between dimensions. Since he's a practical, cautious man and not a complete idiot, he retraces his steps and slips right back out again. But he's not alone. And now his life is going to take a sharp turn away from "repressed" and "controlled", to very strange places indeed: into a warped image of the past and into a very uncertain future, through war and violence, to the very edges of reality and beyond.
Why I love it: I really like the characters here and their relationships - Ryou and Darius are great, and my favorite is Darius's brother Leyam. The worldbuilding is very interesting, both in a magical and in a political sense. I really enjoy the emphasis on dealing with culture clashes in a relationship (and between modern Japan and ancient Assyria, there are many.) To round it out there are some great action/adventure parts.

Superstition by [archiveofourown.org profile] Superstition_hockey
219k, OMC/OMC (main) with plenty of other relationships (one main character is aro and poly), series (6 completed main installments, many extras)
Summary: This series is basically the written embodiment of this pic except with hockey.
Why I love it: I enjoy this both as a romance incl. found family and as a hockey fic. Luc and Jacks are great characters and their relationship, while initially dealing with some understandable misunderstandings (e.g. resulting from when they woke up married), is wonderful. The hockey plot is interesting as well, I especially love the parts with the expansion draft and the new coach. I also enjoy the extras set after the main series featuring their extended family very much.
There are some fics for the series, and I especially enjoyed Sharing the Load by [archiveofourown.org profile] beatrice_otter in which Luc discovers that he may be autistic. And THIS IS NOT A DRILL by [archiveofourown.org profile] lannamichaels, a series of fan reactions. And Points on a Line: A Jantal Primer/Ship Manifesto by [archiveofourown.org profile] Tequila_Mockingbird. Several from this series by [archiveofourown.org profile] dangercupcake are also fun. So yeah, there are some great fanworks.

Falling Falling Stars by [archiveofourown.org profile] not_poignant
440k, OMC/OMC, abuse/r recovery; mind the warnings!
Summary: "Imagine me deciding to feel bad about everything I’ve ever done, and then imagine what kind of life I’ll have. Because I’m not brave enough to live in some fucked up eighteen-hundreds-style purgatory. I’d rather die. There’s no one who wants me, and there’s no one who will. Which is exactly what someone like me deserves, isn’t it?" A story about a broken boy, who is learning how not to break everything else around him.
Notes: I rarely rec WIPs, but this one is very long already, and updates are not regular but frequent. It is a sequel to Spoils of the Spoiled (175k, with different main characters), and the series is a modern AU of the author's Fae Tales Verse, "a predominantly original series of dark fantasy / explicit fairytale erotica." I enjoy those other stories as well, but I rec "Falling Falling Stars" specifically because it is the most important one to me (and I like the main pairing of "Spoils of the Spoiled" less.) Here is a reply by the author to the question if it is necessary to read "Spoils of the Spoiled" first: probably, unless you are fine with not knowing significant parts of the backstory that will be even more important later.
Why I love it: This is one of the rare WIPs where I stop most things I'm doing to read the new chapter whenever it updates. Efnisien did many bad things in the past and doesn't know what to do with himself now. With the help of his therapist, his new boyfriend, and possibly some other people he tries to figure out how to deal with what he did, how to carry on and do better. Efnisien has himself been traumatized in the past, which he only gradually realizes/admits to himself, but it's only ever used as an explanation for his behavior, never an excuse. It's hard to explain this story and why I love it, it's full of angst but there's also plenty of softness and most importantly hope: hope that even someone like Efnisien can stop hurting others and himself and maybe even one day be happy.

176k, gen focus with background OMC/OMC, age regression+amnesia & aftermath, series (6 completed stories, unclear if future extras)
Summary of first story: Magic isn't real, but someone has somehow developed a "magical" method to turn people into their teenage selves temporarily. When seventeen-year-old Jonathan thereby finds himself in the future, his suddenly older sister and a future friend look after him for a few days, while he learns about the man he will become.
Why I like it: This is fanfic of the author's own unfinished&unpublished police procedural with a romantic subplot. I really like Jonathan and his struggles when he finds himself in a very strange future in the shadow of Older-Him and his family and friends, and then the aftermath too.
